Acadiana reported 226 new coronavirus infections Tuesday, continuing a steady flow of cases in the region that also is experiencing more hospitalizations of patients at a rate nearing peak levels.

Fourteen additional patients required hospital care Tuesday in the Acadiana region that state health officials define without St. Mary Parish. That makes a total of 124 COVID-related hospitalizations in the region, or one less than the peak of 125 patients on April 10 during the height of the virus’ spread in Louisiana.

Tuesday’s increase in new cases put the eight-parish region at 5,983 total COVID-19 infections identified through more than 98,000 tests. Lafayette Parish reported one additional death Tuesday and Acadia Parish had one death removed, leaving the region at 250 lives lost.

New cases of coronavirus in Acadiana again outpaced every other part of the state Tuesday, with the 900,000-person New Orleans region following the eight parishes in Acadiana with 148 new cases.

Acadiana hospitals had occupied more than half of their total beds Tuesday, with 1,200 in use by all patients in Acadiana while 523 were available. Intensive care unit beds are in a similar situation, with 50 remaining available while 128 are occupied.

Ventilators still remain broadly available in the region, as 56 of the area’s 180 hospital-grade breathing machines were in use, though the number of patients needing the machines in Acadiana climbed by six to reach 16 Tuesday, the region’s largest number since May 11.

Tuesday’s 226 new cases come amid 3,973 new test results, giving the region a 5.7% positivity rate for the day after Acadiana maintained a 10% positivity rate among test results in the past seven days.

Across the more than 98,600 tests administered in the 655,000-person Acadiana area, 7% of tests have come back positive, compared to 8% for the state as a whole.

The largest number of new cases reported Tuesday in Acadiana came in Lafayette Parish, which recorded 100 new cases to reach 2,158 overall, the largest increase of any parish in the state Tuesday.

Lafayette Parish has seen the third largest increase in cases of all parishes in Louisiana in the past seven days at 584, behind only East Baton Rouge and Jefferson parishes that have nearly twice the population than Lafayette.

Across the state, hospitalizations for COVID-19 rose Tuesday by 44 to reach 781 as the number of COVID-19 patients needing hospital care continues to climb toward previously high levels.

Louisiana’s 1,014 new cases Tuesday come across 23,874 tests reported in the state, a major increase above normal daily reports, for a positivity rate of 4.2%, compared to 7.8% in the past seven days.

Twenty-two new deaths were reported in Louisiana, marking an increase of 0.7% over Monday’s total to bring the state to 3,113 lives lost to COVID-19.

Acadiana’s 226 new cases mark a 3.9% increase over Monday’s total, putting it at double the statewide caseload increase of 1.8%.
