A wild day and evening of severe weather is forecast for the Upper Midwest Wednesday, forecasters warned. Some storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.
Locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding are possible as well.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of eastern Michigan along with northwestern Ohio under a "moderate" risk for severe storms. This is level 4 on the 1-5 scale of severe weather warnings issued by the center.
"Moderate risks are more typically issued for the Plains states during the peak of severe weather season in the spring," said AccuWeather meteorologist Renee Duff. "To have one issued this far north and east shows the volatility of the atmospheric setup for Wednesday's severe weather."
The greatest risk for severe weather, primarily in the form of damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado, encompasses Michigan cities such as Detroit and Lansing, as well as Toledo, Ohio, the Capital Weather Gang said.
Wind gusts of up to 70 mph are possible.
More than 8 million people live in the area where severe storms are most likely.
It's "not too often you see southern Michigan lit up with severe thunderstorms in the early afternoon," tweeted BAMWeather meteorologist Ryan Maue on Wednesday. "This is in the wake of (Tropical Storm) Cristobal which went into Ontario but dragged this historical tropical air mass into the Great Lakes."
The stormy setup follows on the heels of the remnants of Cristobal, which finally moved north into Canada on Wednesday.
In western Wisconsin, the rain from remnants of Cristobal washed out portions of some roads. Heavy rain also hit Missouri and Iowa on Tuesday, filling creeks and causing scattered flooding. Some low-lying areas and streets in Iowa were under water Wednesday, following heavy rains.
