(KNSI) - Officials say Stearns County has hit the peak for COVID-19 cases.

Stearns County Emergency Manager Erin Tufte talked with KNSI News about when we hit the peak.

"Since about May 11th, we have been trending downward in the daily case count. Which would indicate that we had our highest number of cases in later April or the first part of May."

She says the stay at home order and the closing of many public spaces kept the local healthcare system from getting overrun.

"The actions that we took, the things that we put in place I would have to say, did contribute to our ability to make sure that we have healthcare available to the people in this area. "

She says just because we've passed the peak, doesn't mean it's time to stop doing the things that have helped get us to this point because the virus is still out there.

"I think it's important for us to continue to be vigilant in our efforts to make sure that we are taking precautions by washing our hands. Wearing masks when we're in public to help protect others around us. We are still seeing COVID spread."

Health officials are concerned about possible waves of the virus returning or the chance of a second peak and will continue to monitor the situation.

Tufte says with the declining case count, Stearns County is beginning to downsize its emergency operations center.

"Our emergency operations center is starting to go to a partial activation instead of full activation. What that means is we are bringing back some of this coordination to the department level rather than through the emergency operations center."

The number of phone calls into the center has dramatically decreased in the last couple of weeks.

The county will continue to follow the COVID-19 response in the area and make decisions to share with the community and organize the response with local healthcare providers.

On Wednesday, Stearns County reported 14 deaths and 2,047 cases since the virus was first found in the county on March 12th.
