A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of the state on Monday evening, as forecasters predict the storms will continue on the Forth of July holiday.
The warning, issued for every county except Union, Essex and Hudson, will last until 10 p.m. It also affects parts, of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, the National Weather Service said. Meteorologists have also warned of lightning, hail and wind gusts up to 75 mph.
Temperatures reached a high in the low 90s on Monday, according to forecasters.
It is expected to be partly sunny early in the day on the Fourth of July, with a highs around 87 degrees, and a chance of showers, the weather service said. In the afternoon and evening, skies will be mostly cloudy with a more likely chance of rain and thunderstorms. Storms may also produce heavy rain and gusty winds.
Temperatures at night will fall to lows in the high 60′s, meteorologists said.
