A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the entirety of the Chicago area on Friday night as damaging winds and heavy rains descended on the region.
The watch, which isn't set to expire until 2 a.m. Saturday, includes DeKalb, LaSalle, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties in Illinois, along with Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter counties in Indiana.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for LaPorte County, Indiana, until 2 a.m.
Following a morning that saw dangerous winds and heavy downpours for some, storms brought fierce wind gusts, large hail and torrential rainfall in the nighttime hours. A tornado warning was issued for portions of Will and Kankakee counties after a tornado-producing was located near Peotone, moving east at 45 miles per hour.
With rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, a flood watch was issued until 3 a.m. across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, warning that flash flooding was possible. The National Weather Service advised that flooding may occur in poor drainage areas and urban areas and that underpasses, roads and streets may be flooded. A flash flood warning was issued for DuPage County and southern Kane County until 2:15 a.m.
