Tornado warning severe thunderstorm alert in parts of US - The Economic Times

The US National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Guilford County and Alamance County in North Carolina. A severe thunderstorm, which has the potential to transform into a tornado, was detected near Elon. Elon is located approximately 7 miles northwest of Burlington. These storms are currently moving eastward at a speed of 35 mph.
The primary hazards associated with this weather event include the risk of flying debris, which poses a significant danger to individuals without proper shelter. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable and may be damaged or destroyed. Additionally, roofs, windows, and vehicles are likely to sustain damage, and trees may be impacted as well.

The storm is anticipated to reach Burlington at approximately 12:10 p.m., followed by Graham at around 12:15 p.m. Furthermore, it is important to note that both counties are also under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Extreme weather events, which claim more lives than hurricanes and tornadoes, will likely increase in the future, experts said. Each year in the US, thunderstorms produce 20 to 25 million lightning flashes that strike the ground, killing an average of over 20 people and injuring hundreds more, often in devastating and permanent ways, according to NWS. Older people and those with diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other serious health conditions are most at risk for severe weather conditions.
