Denver Plains under multiday threat of severe storms packing huge hail destructive winds and tornadoes - Fox Weather

DENVER – Severe storms capable of producing huge hail, destructive winds and tornadoes are expected across much of the Plains on Thursday.

Thunderstorms were ongoing Thursday across parts of the central Plains and are forecast to drift into the lower Mississippi Valley by Thursday afternoon, supporting an isolated severe weather threat as far south as northern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi.

Meanwhile, a mid-level disturbance will roll across the central Rockies and eject into the central Plains Thursday afternoon, the FOX Forecast Center said. This will provide enough lift to support severe thunderstorm development, with the most dangerous threat expected across the central High Plains.

Organized storm clusters may persist into the evening hours, with some severe weather risk lingering across the central and southern Plains.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted an area covering nearly 2.6 million people across eastern Colorado, western Kansas and far northwestern Oklahoma for a level 3 out of 5 on the severe thunderstorm risk scale.

Cities facing this higher risk include Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo in Colorado and Garden City and Liberal in Kansas.

The FOX Forecast Center said the tornado threat will be the highest throughout a large section of eastern Colorado, where atmospheric conditions will allow a few afternoon and evening supercells to become tornadic.

Hail larger than 2 inches and 75-plus mph wind gusts are most likely from eastern Colorado through western Kansas and far northwestern Oklahoma, though severe storms with gusty winds and hail are possible from Montana southeastward to Mississippi.

"There is a benefit of this. The amount of rain we're going to squeeze out is monumental for Kansas, which has been in an extended drought," FOX Weather meteorologist Steve Bender said.

Weather observation sites around Denver have recorded more rain in the past 60 days than any other three-month period on record.

Friday

Thunderstorms should be ongoing at the start of the day across the Plains, some of which may be strong to severe.

While isolated severe storms could develop across the High Plains Friday afternoon, those lingering morning storms over the Plains may locally redevelop, the FOX Forecast Center said.

By Friday evening, the strengthening of a low-level jet across the southern and central Plains should allow the storms over the High Plains to shift eastward and increase in coverage near and ahead of a weak surface low crossing Kansas and Oklahoma.

The severe weather risk should remain over the High Plains and Plains throughout the day Friday, but the FOX Forecast Center said the threat would likely continue into the evening and perhaps spread into Missouri overnight.

The SPC highlighted an area covering over 11.3 million from eastern Colorado, central and southern Kansas, the northern Texas Panhandle, northern Oklahoma, western Missouri and northwestern Arkansas for a level 2 out of 5 on the severe thunderstorm risk scale.

Major cities facing this higher risk include Denver and Colorado Springs in Colorado, Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma and Kansas City in Missouri.

Saturday

More scattered severe storms are expected across central portions of the U.S. on Saturday.

The severe weather risk appears most likely from the central High Plains southeastward across parts of Kansas and Oklahoma.

The SPC highlighted an area covering nearly 7.2 million from southeastern Wyoming, eastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico to western Nebraska, western and southern Kansas, the northern Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri for a level 2 out of 5 on the severe thunderstorm risk scale.

Major cities facing this higher risk include Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman and Lawton in Oklahoma and Little Rock in Arkansas.
