Severe storm chances return to the eastern third of the country this weekend into next week. A weak trough of low pressure will be in place on Saturday, before a trailing surface low ramps up storm chances Sunday into Monday. Heavy rain will accompany the low on Sunday, increasing the potential for flooding.
Weak troughing over the Mid-Atlantic will provide just enough lift and shear to spur the potential for a few strong or severe storms in the afternoon and evening. Wind and hail are the main concerns from any stronger storms.
Strong storms look to target the I-95 corridor by the early to mid afternoon hours. Storms will push east into the evening across the Chesapeake Bay toward the coast.
A trailing frontal system will increase the potential for thunderstorms and flooding rainfall on Sunday across the Appalachians and Ohio Valley. Damaging winds are expected to be the primary threat, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Storms look to intensify in the afternoon with fairly widespread heavy rain. Storms will track east through the afternoon and evening, eventually moving into central PA and western NY overnight.
As the low approaches the east coast on Monday, additional severe storms are in the forecast. The SPC is highlighting New England, but portions of Upstate NY and the Mid-Atlantic could see strong storms as well.
Heavy rain could lead to slow commutes and minor flooding Monday morning before storms gain strength coupled with daytime heating Monday afternoon.
