Severe thunderstorms with the potential for heavy rain, gusty winds and hail are in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon and evening in New Jersey as hot, humid weather returns to the state.
High temperatures will climb into the 90s on Tuesday ahead of the storms, the National Weather Service said in its morning forecast discussion.
Counties north of the I-95 corridor are under a “slight” for severe thunderstorms, while the rest of the state is under a “marginal” risk, with the exception of coastal areas in Atlantic, Cape May and Ocean counties.
The primary risk will be damaging winds, the weather service said. AccuWeather.com’s forecast calls for localized wind gusts topping 50 mph.
Showers may linger overnight into Wednesday, which will primarily dry, but with similar high temperatures in the 90s.
Ahead of the storms, the forecast for Monday calls for ideal conditions with sunny skies and moderate temperatures.
“The quiet, perfect summer forecast we have been waiting for occurs today” the National Weather Service said.
“Tuesday will be a very different story, as another cold front will bring a risk of severe thunderstorms by the afternoon and evening hours,” the weather service said in a Facebook update.
