N.J. weather: Severe heat expected again as temperatures could hit 100 degrees in upcoming week - NJ.com

The National Weather Service reports a severe heat increase could once again come to New Jersey this upcoming week with temperatures possibly reaching a high of 104 degrees on Thursday.

“We’re looking at widespread mid to upper 90s, maybe in some of the more urban areas (and) in parts of northern New Jersey could get near 100,” National Weather Service (NWS) lead meteorologist Michael Silva said about Thursday. “But it’s also going to be quite humid on Thursday. So, we’re looking at widespread heat index values in excess of 100 degrees.”

In recent weeks, record-breaking high temperatures have blanketed parts of the state. Silva said the National Weather Service doesn’t define what a heat wave is, but said New Jersey is once again going to see some high heat index values this upcoming week.

Silva emphasized that Thursday will be the hottest day, though temperatures could the the 90s before then.

On Monday, Silva said the temperature will reach low 80s to mid 80s throughout the state. By Tuesday, the temperatures will begin to rise reaching the low 90s.

“It’s going to warm up and we are going to see some pretty high heat index values it’s going to return it’s going to turn quite hot and humid,” Silva said.

heat for Thursday

Beginning on Monday, temperatures will start to rise throughout the week, with Thursday being the hottest day of the week.

For Wednesday, Silva said the temperature will be in the high 80s to low 90s, but by Thursday, temperatures are expected to reach up to 104 degrees.

“Earlier it looked like there was going to be more of a prolonged high heat ... But now that it’s really looking like it’s going to be Thursday is going to be the day that’s going to be the worst,” Silva said.

As Friday’s temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s, Silva said rain will be approaching from the west.

“The question is how much rain we can get. If it turns out that that (rain) front is a little bit slower, and we don’t get rain until later on, then we may be a little bit warmer,” Silva said.
