Several isolated but intense thunderstorm cells have been moving across parts of northern New Jersey Thursday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings in Bergen and Hudson counties.
Some of the storms are lashing the region with heavy downpours, small hail and wind gusts that could get as strong as 60 mph. Forecasters said they can’t rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado being spawned by these thunderstorm cells.
The National Weather Service issued the first thunderstorm warning of the day around 12:50 p.m. in Bergen County. The warning was effective until 1:15 p.m. Thursday.
Another severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 12:55 p.m., covering parts of Bergen and Hudson counties, along with New York City. This warning will be active until 1:45 p.m.
The weather service’s New York regional office said a trained weather spotter “has reported weak rotation with this storm in Bloomfield” in Essex County. But there have been no confirmed tornadoes touching down as of 1 p.m.
Severe thunderstorm watch issued for 5 counties
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, effective from Thursday afternoon through 8 p.m. Thursday. The watch — which is not as urgent as a warning — also includes New York City.
A flood advisory is active in Bergen County through 2:15 p.m. in areas that are getting heavy downpours from the afternoon thunderstorms. “Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas” is possible, the advisory says.
The thunderstorms in northern New Jersey have popped up during the fourth day of what’s expected to be New Jersey’s longest heat wave of the summer, with temperatures soaring into the mid- to upper 90s in many parts of the region and high humidity making it feel as hot as 100 to 105 degrees.
