A cluster of severe thunderstorms with widespread destructive winds known as a derecho will sweep through parts of the Northern Plains through Tuesday night, and additional rounds of storms and flooding rain are possible this week in the Midwest and East.
Severe thunderstorms have already produced wind gusts up to 96 mph in parts of South Dakota around midday Tuesday. Tennis-ball size hail driven by estimated 70 to 80 mph winds broke skylights out of a home in Dewey County, Tuesday morning. A roof was blown off a home in Highmore, about 45 miles east-northeast of the state's capital, Pierre.
This prompted the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to issue higher-end "destructive" severe thunderstorm warnings, used only when 80 mph winds and/or baseball size hail is expected.
This line of severe t-storms will continue to sweep southeast into parts of Minnesota and Iowa through the evening and has met the criteria to be deemed a derecho, a widespread, long-lived convective windstorm with damage tens of miles wide and hundreds of miles long, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.
Other more scattered severe thunderstorms with hail, winds and locally flooding rain are possible through early Wednesday morning from parts of the Midwest into the Mid-Atlantic states.
This week's weather pattern is a classic one for July, with a dome of high pressure contributing to hot, humid conditions in portions of the Midwest and South. Circulating clockwise around that high are subtle jet stream disturbances that tap into the hot, humid air and contribute to a broad area of stormy weather.
The forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday also include severe weather threats in parts of the Northern Plains, Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Southeast on both days.
Damaging straight-line winds and hail will once again be the primary threats. Localized flash flooding will be a concern in many of the same areas at risk for severe weather.
Additional rounds of severe weather are likely Friday into the weekend, but it's too early to highlight the potential threat areas.
