A system coming across the northern tier of the Nation will bring a chance for strong to severe storms through Sunday. All modes of severe are in the forecast today for the Midwest, including the risk of tornadoes. The storms will continue to progress east and bring severe chances to the Northeast in the coming days.
Severe storm chances are possible for Colorado up through Michigan on Monday. Chicago is under the slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms. The main threat with these storms will be the potential to see strong winds and large hail but we could also be dealing with an isolated tornado through the Midwest.
Showers and storms will be isolated in nature – so we don’t anticipate everyone to see a severe storm, but those who do will have all modes of severe weather possible. The timeline will be for Monday evening, with locally heavy rainfall too. A complex of storms looks to impact the Detroit/Ft Wayne/Toledo area after dark, so please have multiple ways to get alerts.
With the risk of locally heavy rainfall, the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has highlighted the risk of excessive rainfall through the Midwest and northern Great Lakes. It is a low end, but non-zero threat for flooding in these locations.
The risk area on Tuesday is much smaller, only through the Wisconsin/Minnesota border along a trailing piece of energy that will fire up more storms with northwesterly flow. We anticipate a few gusty thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening hours.
The coverage of storms will be minimal and not everyone will see a severe storm, but those who do will severe wind gusts, hail and the potential for heavy rain too. Most storms will come to a close around sundown.
