More Severe Weather: Looking Ahead to Monday & Tuesday - WeatherNation

The High Plains and Upper Midwest have been the focus for severe weather all summer and we’re already looking ahead to our next round of severe weather early next week. We’re already dealing with the severe weather threat in the Northern Rockies into the High Plains this weekend, but the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted another two days of risk area for Monday and Tuesday.

It is all due to an active jet stream pattern and a large ridge of high pressure that is keeping storms from diving too far south into the central and southern Plains. Our next upper level low moves through Monday into Tuesday bringing us the storm chances. At the surface, we have instability building along a surface low pressure system, which will aid in storm development.

Monday, the risk is centered along the border with Canada from far NE Montana through the I29 corridor of North Dakota. When storm outlooks are issued this far in advance it is an indication of confidence in the severe weather threat. As a reminder, severe weather is classified by: large hail, greater than the size or quarters, and damaging wind gusts higher than 58 mph, or a tornado. In addition to severe threats, we also have the potential for heavy rain and flooding.

By Tuesday the threat is moving into the Great Lakes region, with many populated cities in the risk area. It is too soon to talk exact location, but please make sure you assess your plans for Tuesday and have multiple ways to get severe weather warnings if you live in the Great Lakes region.

Be sure to check back with WeatherNation on-air and online throughout the day for the latest forecast update and any severe weather alerts.
