New England is magical during the fall season, and those looking for outside social distancing activities during the coronavirus pandemic might be even more excited for leaf peeping this year.
Fall officially begins on Sept. 22 and ends on Monday, Dec. 21 but fall foliage runs on its own schedule.
Experts are weighing in on what exactly this season will look like. And while these predictions might not be 100% accurate, they can help you make plans this season.
The Smoky Mountains 2020 Fall Foliage Map predicts the peak season for most of Massachusetts will be around Oct. 5 and last until the 26. If you can’t wait that long, the Berkshires is expected to start the season off in Massachusetts, peaking at the end of September.
The map also predicts you can extend the season by heading out to Eastern Massachusetts or the Cape near the end of October.
NewEngland.com also had a map with predictions. It also says peak season in Massachusetts will begin in early October and last until about Oct. 21.
“Factors like temperature and moisture are different every year, meaning we never see the same show twice,” the website states.
But due to a drought this year, the leaves might be harder to predict across New England.
The leaves are drying out more quickly than in a typical year, meaning colors may come in earlier, Jim Salge, Yankee Magazine’s foliage expert and a former meteorologist in at Mount Washington, New Hampshire, told USA Today.
That would mean that instead of mid-October, like the maps predict, they might peak toward the end of September.
“There are more severe areas,” Salge told the newspaper. “Rhode Island is more severe, for example.”
Those looking to travel around New England to see the beautiful fall colors might have to keep a closer eye on things and be flexible with plans.
It’s common for people to schedule the second weekend of October for leaf peeping, USA Today reports. But that might not be the ideal time for the northern part of New England. Instead, people might have to travel to the southern parts.
USA Today also listed two New England locations on its 10 best destinations for fall foliage, including New Hampshire’s White Mountains ranked No. 4 and Stowe, Vermont, ranked No. 6.
But those trips this year might be a bit more difficult. Many New England states have travel restrictions in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Anyone traveling to Massachusetts from restricted states, or any Massachusetts residents returning home from those states, must quarantine for 14 days or produce a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours of arriving in the Bay State. As of Sept. 12 this includes Rhode Island.
People who do not comply with the governor’s order could face a fine of $500 per day.
And Massachusetts residents are not exempt from Maine’s quarantine or testing requirements.
