The Cameron Peak Fire burning in Northern Colorado's Poudre Canyon went from about 24,000 acres on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 5 to 102,000 acres by the evening of Monday, Sept. 7.

The animated image below shows just how explosive the fire's growth was over Labor Day weekend, showing the fire progression from Sept. 1-7.

Many homeowners in evacuation areas already knew how quickly a fire could get out of control after their experiences with the 2012 High Park Fire.

"The High Park Fire went 7 miles in four hours," said Rist Canyon resident Louise Creager, who lost her home in that fire. "It flared up so quickly and it wrapped around our house. We know a fire with the right winds can come and take whatever it wants."

Joe Skelton is another Cameron Peak Fire evacuee who also lost a home in the High Park Fire, and after the current fire's swift growth last weekend, he's taking a cautious approach as he returns home.

“We’re not even going unpack the car,” Skelton said. “If we see this thing blowing up again next week, when it starts getting hot again and temperatures get into the 80s, we’re ready to go.”

UPDATE: Cameron Peak Fire hasn't reached CSU's Mountain Campus
