*A Severe Weather First Alert has been issued for Friday through Saturday due to the possibility of localized flooding*
The National Weather Service has issued FLOOD WATCHES for portions of our area starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11 lasting through Sunday morning.
Currently, far western parts of Lee, Charlotte, and Collier Counties are under the Areal Flood Watch. This includes Cape Coral, south Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda.
Regardless of the location of the flood watches, any spot in Southwest Florida could see flooding over the next few days.
Rain and storm coverage will increase across the area into the weekend.
A robust tropical wave over the Bahamas, Invest 96-L, continues to organize this afternoon as it slowly drifts towards South Florida. This wave has been given high odds for development from the National Hurricane Center for the next 48 hours.
While concerns for a tropical storm or hurricane remain very low with this system, rainfall will be the main headline getting into Saturday.
Deep tropical moisture associated with a southeast flow across the state, will provide ample fuel for efficient rain producing showers and storms into Saturday. The presence of Invest 96-L will help to focus that activity over SWFL for much of the weekend.
A flood watch remains in effect for all coastal areas through at least Saturday evening due to the anticipated rainfall on top of an already saturated ground thanks to antecedent rain. Either way, expect a dreary weekend with mainly cloudy skies for both days, Saturday being the rainier of the two.
Cloud coverage will help to keep temperatures down, at least for Saturday, with most areas stuck in the mid-80s for much of the day. A bit more sunshine could help areas hit 90 by Sunday.
Into next week, a batch of dry air will move over the state, helping to bring rain chances back to normal daily levels. Highs will return to the low 90s during that period as well.
