KEARNEY, Neb. - TUESDAY & TUESDAY NIGHT:
A cold front situated from north to south right in the middle of the state shortly after daybreak will slowly advance eastward through the day. This front will bring our area several weather concerns.
The first, biggest concern will be strengthening north winds on the west side of that front. We will see sustained winds of 25 to 45 mph. Wind gusts could get as strong as 55 to 65 mph. Some models hint at wind gusts as high as 70 mph. Winds like this are strong enough to cause power outages and do damage to trees and tree limbs. Any loose items outside of your house need to be secured if you don't want to risk losing them.
Widespread rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected for the area, especially this afternoon and early evening. Stronger thunderstorms may develop this afternoon for areas near a low pressure system south or southeast of the Tri-Cities. Areas near and east/southeast of the Tri-Cities will need to be weather aware any time this afternoon and early evening. All modes of severe weather will be possible including large hail (possibly over 2 inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, and a few tornadoes.
Many areas in Central and Eastern Nebraska could see 1 to 3 inches of rain. Some locally heavier rainfall is possible around some of the stronger thunderstorms. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 7:00am tomorrow morning for much of Southeastern Nebraska east of the Tri-Cities.
Along with everything else going on, the cold front will be bringing in chillier temperatures as well. Ahead of the front, folks in Eastern Nebraska will warm into the 80s to near 90°. Behind the cold front, temperatures will drop back into the 60s, then 50s. The chilly temperatures combined with the very strong winds and and rain will make for very unpleasant conditions.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms will start to clear from west to east overnight. They should be clear of the western half of the state by midnight. Some may linger in the eastern 1/4 of Nebraska through tomorrow morning. Winds will remain strong overnight, but will be a little lighter tomorrow morning around 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph by sunrise.
WEDNESDAY through MONDAY:
Dry weather returns for this six day stretch. Wednesday will be a warm, but slightly below average day with highs in the 70s. Winds will be breezy (windy) out of the northwest at 15 to 25 mph. Expect sunny skies. As mentioned above, some rain and thunderstorms may last for part of the morning for Eastern Nebraska.
Thursday and Friday won't be as breezy. Both days will be sunny. Highs on Thursday will be back into the 80s. For Friday, highs will mostly be in the mid to upper 80s.
Winds start to increase more this weekend where it will be a bit on the windy side. While there may be a few more clouds around, the weather remains dry. Highs on Saturday will be back in the 80s with some lower 90s in the southwest. Sunday gets warmer yet with mid to upper 80s and lower to mid 90s. The warmest temperatures will again be in the southwest.
Monday may not be as windy as the weekend, but will still be breezy. With partly cloudy skies, highs will again be in the mid 80s to mid 90s.
