NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - A very active stretch of weather is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours across the state as not only will a high wind event unfold across a large portion of the state where winds could be gusting up to and potentially in excess of 60 MPH, but also areas of strong to severe storms are expected with areas of heavy rains as a strong low pressure system makes it's way through the state.
Monday evening has the potentially to be stormy across Greater Nebraska with an Enhanced Risk from the SPC covering much of north central Nebraska back toward Lincoln County. Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms will be possible along a slow moving cold front with large hail, damaging winds, a tornado or two, and heavy rains possible. In fact, there's a Flood Watch that's in place across north central sections of the state down towards Broken Bow. These areas could pick up several inches of rain tonight into early on Tuesday that could cause some flooding problems.
Winds are expected to really ramp up Monday night into the day on Tuesday as winds turn to the northeast and increase to around 20 to 30 MPH with gusts to around 60 MPH possible. These strong winds could potentially increase even higher - with sustained winds of 30 to 45 MPH possible by Tuesday afternoon with gusts again potentially reaching and exceeding 60 MPH at times. Not only will it be windy, but it will continue to be wet on Tuesday with more areas of showers and t'storms. The severe weather threat is expected to diminish for Tuesday with some areas of heavy rain being the primary threat along with strong, potentially damaging winds.
Winds should subside Tuesday night into Wednesday, though it will remain breezy with gusts still approaching 30 MPH at times. Winds should be brisk, but much lighter then on Wednesday out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH.
Generally dry and seasonal weather is expected Wednesday and beyond into the weekend with highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s.
MONDAY NIGHT: Thunderstorms likely in the evening with showers and t'storms overnight. Some storms may be strong to severe with some heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado. Lows in the lower 50s. Northeast winds increasing to 20 to 30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH possible. 100% chance for showers and t'storms.
TUESDAY: Very windy with showers and storms likely. Highs in the upper 50s. North winds at 30 to 45 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH possible. 80% chance for showers and t'storms.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, cool, and breezy. Lows in the mid 40s. North winds decreasing to 15 to 30 MPH with some stronger gusts, eventually decreasing to 10 to 15 MPH after midnight. 50% chance for showers and t'storms.
WEDNESDAY: Sunny and nice. Highs in the mid 70s. A touch breezy with northwest winds at 10 to 20 MPH.
