Ohioans filed 287,499 fewer unemployment claims last week compared to the peak jobless number of more than 776,000 in April. Initial unemployment applications also declined for the week of June 7-13, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) reported 32,788 initial jobless claims to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The total number of initial jobless claims filed in Ohio over the last 13 weeks now stands at 1,360,631, with more than $4.1 billion in unemployment compensation payments distributed to more than 700,000 claimants.

The decline comes nearly a month after retail and restaurants were permitted to reopen across the state and two weeks after childcare and day camps were given the go-ahead to restart with capacity restrictions.

Earlier this week, Gov. Mike DeWine announced that the state has requested $3.1 billion from the U.S. Department of Labor in order to meet Ohio's unemployment obligations during the COVID-19 pandemic. From March to April, statewide payroll employment decreased by a record 823,700, more than the last three years combined.

Ohio borrowed more than $3.3 billion during the Great Recession and joins states such as California and Texas in borrowing money during this crisis.

ODJFS has issued more than $2.1 billion in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance payments to more than 262,000 claimants.

Nationally, initial jobless claims for last week were 1.5 million, a decrease of 58,000 from the previous week's revised level, leaving more then 20 million Americans unemployed. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 14.1% for the week ending June 6, unchanged from the previous week's revised rate.
