FDOT: Severe corrosion found at Roosevelt Bridge causing support of bridge to be ruptured - TCPalm

MARTIN COUNTY — Inspections by the Florida Department of Transportation Thursday showed the southbound Roosevelt Bridge has "severe corrosion resulting in steel tendons that support the bridge being ruptured."

FDOT officials are warning people to not be near or under the first span of the southbound Roosevelt Bridge. According to a social media post, the agency will be fencing off the area Thursday.

It is unclear how long it will take to repair the bridge, according to FDOT officials. State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Stuart, said it could take up to six months for the bridge to be fixed.

In a social media post Thursday, the FDOT stated it had “completed the interior visual and sounding inspection of the NB and SB portions of the Roosevelt Bridge. Another post cited that the southbound Roosevelt Bridge will need to be supported as soon as possible.

"Testing will include carefully drilling into the concrete to examine the steel tendons supporting the bridge to see if there is corrosion."

On Wednesday, both northbound and southbound bridges were closed off to the public after a crack and falling concrete were discovered Tuesday night.

State Road A1A is closed to all but local traffic between Albany Avenue and just south of Wright Boulevard, Stuart Police Chief Joseph Tumminelli said.

On Thursday, some Martin and St. Lucie County locals said their commutes doubled in time as they had to either drive to Port St. Lucie to go from Jensen Beach to Stuart or they had to take Florida's turnpike.

Overdorf said FDOT officials have told him they don't know how the southbound span got corroded. He said officials have told him they have not found the same type of corrosion problems in the northbound bridge, but are sending the concrete and other materials for analysis before determining whether the bridge can be reopened.

FDOT is bringing in supports to try and shore up the bridge near Dixie Highway with an eye on trying to reopen Dixie Highway to traffic, Overdorf said.

Neither maritime nor train traffic will be affected, Overdorf said. Both bridges are owned by the state and the state plans to pay for any repairs needed.
