A frontal boundary is progressing across the central United States on Wednesday, and by the end of the work week we will see a few stronger storms into the Great Lakes region.
We have the isolated chance for severe weather up and down the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States on Thursday. While the primary concern will be for damaging wind gusts, we could see an isolated tornado or water spout across parts of Lake Erie.
Whenever you see a long north-south risk of severe storms (as shown above) from Georgia to the Great Lakes, that usually means a line of rain will contain a few embedded wind gusts. Most of the line of rain will not produce severe storms, but a few spots will warrant warnings.
Starting early on Thursday we will see a few isolated showers across the Great Lakes region, along the warm front. Most of these will be sub-severe but don’t be surprised if you hear an isolated rumble of thunder.
As the day progresses we will be seeing a hearty line of storms across the Great Lakes region, back into Ohio. Heavy rain will be our primary concern, but a few isolated strong and severe storms may be possible.
By mid-afternoon storms will be into western New York and Pennsylvania, with a higher likelihood of severe weather with the increase of daytime heating.
The front will move east through the evening and overnight hours, bringing showers into New England and the I-95 corridor. While the severe threat diminishes overnight, a few lingering strong storms are not out of the question.
In terms of rainfall accumulation we have the potential for a few inches in heavier downpours. Generally, most will see less than 1″ of rainfall.
