Waves of rain showers and strong thunderstorms have started to sweep across parts of New Jersey Monday night, prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings in three counties.
Some of the thunderstorms, associated with a nor’easter that is expected to strengthen in the Atlantic early Tuesday, could pack damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger along with heavy downpours and penny-size hail, the weather service said.
The weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 7:35 p.m. Monday — effective until 8:15 p.m. — for Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties, in addition to Delaware and Philadelphia counties in eastern Pennsylvania.
UPDATE (8:35 p.m.): The National Weather Service said strong thunderstorms will impact portions of Hunterdon, Mercer, northeastern Burlington, southern Somerset, southwestern Monmouth, southwestern Middlesex and southwestern Warren through 9 p.m. Monday. These storms could produce wind gusts as high as 40 mph, along with pea-size hail.
Heavy rain expected
Forecasters say they are expecting between 2 to 4 inches of rain to fall in areas that get the strongest thunderstorms or steadiest waves of rain between Monday night and late Tuesday, and some parts of New Jersey could get as much as 5 to 6 inches — enough to could cause flash flooding on saturated roads and highways.
Some wind gusts could be strong enough to knock down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered power outages, the weather service said.

Although New Jersey hasn’t had much rain during the past few weeks, 4 inches in one or two days would be as much rain as our region normally gets during the entire month of October.
- The Newark area usually gets an average of 3.79 inches of rain in October but has gotten only 1 inch so far this month, according to data from the National Weather Service.
- The Trenton area usually averages just under 4 inches of rain in October but has measured just 0.32 inches so far this month, as of early Monday morning.
- The Atlantic City area typically gets 4.14 inches of rain in October but has gotten only 1.09 inches as of early Monday morning.
