Alabama’s secondary severe weather season is right around the corner - AL.com

Today is Fall Severe Weather Awareness Day in Alabama.

Why now? Alabama’s secondary severe weather season is about to kick into gear, and the National Weather Service is urging Alabamians to go ahead and get prepared.

And speaking of severe weather, there’s a chance for isolated severe storms on Thursday in mainly eastern Alabama as a cold front moves through.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a marginal risk for severe weather -- Level 1 out of 5 -- in its latest forecast update for Thursday:

The areas in dark green will have a marginal risk for severe weather on Thursday. That's Level 1 out of 5 and means isolated severe storms will be possible.

Alabama’s spring severe weather season -- March, April and May -- is well-documented and typically the busiest time of year for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

But there’s another, secondary season that picks up steam in November. The secondary season is thought of as the months of November and December but can stretch all the way through the winter as well.

Looking at weather service data from 1950 through 2020, April is the clear leader for tornadoes, with 553 documented twisters during that timeframe.  That number is boosted significantly by the April 27, 2011, super outbreak.

Alabama tornadoes by month

April by far leads the count of tornadoes by month.

Next, not surprisingly, is March, with 328.

But No. 3 is November, with 279 tornadoes on record, beating out May’s 238 twisters.

Here are the rest of the months ranked by the number of tornadoes:

5. February: 171

6. December: 154

7. January: 149

8. October: 112

9. September: 108

10. June: 79

11. August: 78

12. July: 72

There have been 60 tornadoes reported so far this year in Alabama, with the month of March alone accounting for 41 of them, according to the weather service.

Alabama tornadoes 2021

There have been 60 tornadoes so far this year in Alabama.

But forecasters want Alabamians to be on guard for those November and December severe weather outbreaks as well.

November’s 279 recorded tornadoes since 1950 includes an F4 that hit Huntsville on Nov. 15, 1989. That twister killed 21 people and injured 463.

The most tornadoes on record for the month of November was 36 in 2001.

There has also been an F4 tornado in December. That one hit Tuscaloosa on Dec. 16, 2000. It killed 11 people and caused 144 injuries, according to the weather service.

The most tornadoes in December was 19 in 2012.

The weather service will spend today highlighting severe weather preparedness tips on social media and its website.

One of the most important -- and possibly easiest -- things you can do right now is find your location on a map.

Knowing your county -- and those around you, especially to the west and northwest -- can help you be ready to act if a storm is headed your way.
