Schuyler, N.Y. — A Herkimer County man was taken to a Syracuse hospital Friday with severe internal injuries after the SUV he was driving was hit head on by a car whose driver was on drugs, troopers said.
Troopers responded to the two-vehicle collision at about 10:38 p.m. on State Route 5 in the town of Schuyler, in Herkimer County, according to a news release issued by the New York State Police.
A 2011 Cadillac DTS, driven by Nicholas P. Cecilia, 24, of Utica, was traveling west on NY-5 when it crossed over into the eastbound lane and struck a 2019 Ford Escape head on, troopers said.
Cecilia then fled on foot, but was later found less than a half mile west of the crash on NY-5, troopers said. He jumped onto the hood of a vehicle that was stopped in traffic near the intersection with Oak Hill Road, they said.
The driver of the Ford, James M. Palumbo, 64, of Frankfort, was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with severe internal injuries and was listed in serious condition, troopers said.
Cecilia told police he was involved in the crash and that he had used an illegals drug before driving, according to the release. Troopers did not immediately reveal which drug Cecilia took.
He was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor, second-degree vehicular assault, a class E felony, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, a class E felony, troopers said. He was also charged with several other vehicle and traffic violations, they said.
Cecilia was issued tickets to appear in Schuyler Town Court at 5 p.m. on Nov. 22, troopers said.
