N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorm watch issued with more strong storms on the way today - NJ.com

For the second straight day, forecasters from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center have issued a severe thunderstorm watch in New Jersey, with another batch of strong storms expected to lash the region during the late afternoon and evening on Wednesday.

The watch was issued at about 2:35 p.m. and covers 13 counties in northern and central New Jersey: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren. It will remain in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters are concerned that the combination of 90-degree temperatures and high humidity could add to the intensity of any thunderstorms that develop during the next few hours. They said some storm cells could produce small hail, brief heavy downpours, frequent lightning and damaging wind gusts as strong as 70 mph.

On Tuesday night, many areas of New Jersey were rocked by fierce thunderstorms and intense lightning. Those storms knocked out power to more than 85,000 homes and businesses across the state, with more than 24,000 still out as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Tuesday’s torrential downpours dropped as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain in some towns during a two-hour period, and a trained weather spotter in one town — Matawan in Monmouth County — reported a total of 3.75 inches of rain at 1:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service also received reports of trees uprooted, and some trees hitting houses. One report said strong wind gusts blew a roof off a building in the Basking Ridge area of Somerset County at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Tropical storm watch

On top of the threat of more thunderstorms and potential power outages Wednesday night, New Jersey also faces some impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa late Thursday into early Friday. Tropical storm watches have been issued for Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, along with southeastern Burlington County, effective until further notice.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say the tropical storm could cause isolated areas of flash flooding, some river flooding, dangerous rip currents, dangerous marine conditions and tropical storm-force winds, especially near the coast, late Thursday into early Friday.

If Elsa remains on its current forecast track, the tropical storm watch will likely be upgraded to a warning later Wednesday or early Thursday.

Flash flood watch

UPDATE (3:40 p.m. Wednesday): The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for most of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, effective from 5 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday.

Many areas could get saturated with 2 to 3 inches of rain from the tropical storm, “with locally higher amounts up to 5 inches possible,” the flash flood watch says. “Heavy rain in short periods of time will cause the potential for streams and creeks to quickly rise out of their banks as well as the potential for flash flooding in urban areas.”
