N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorm warnings, flood alerts posted as fierce storms arrive with 60 mph winds, sm - NJ.com

The National Weather Service has issued the first of what will likely become many severe thunderstorm warnings as a wave of fierce storm cells sweeps across eastern Pennsylvania into parts of New Jersey late Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening.

Some of the thunderstorms are packing destructive wind gusts as strong as 60 mph, along with large hail and frequent lightning. In addition, forecasters say heavy downpours could cause flash flooding if the storm cells move slowly or remain in the same general area for a long time.

  • 4:55 p.m.: A flood advisory was issued for northwestern Hunterdon County, west-central Morris County and southwestern Sussex County because of thunderstorms producing heavy rain at this hour. “Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area,” the weather service noted. “This will produce a quick 1 to 2 inches of rain.”
  • 4:30 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for western Hunterdon County and southwestern Warren County, effective until 5:15 p.m. Thursday. This warning also covers parts of Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton counties in eastern Pennsylvania.
  • 4:30 p.m.: A special weather statement was issued for Morris and Somerset counties, because of a strong thunderstorm moving through that region of the state, with pea-sized hail and 40 mph wind gusts.

Sixteen of New Jersey’s 21 counties remain under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Thursday, and forecasters say some storms that develop could pack enough punch to topple large tree limbs or power lines, sparking power outages.

N.J. weather tornado watch vs. warning

This graphic from the National Weather Service explains the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning.

The thunderstorms that are moving across New Jersey are part of the same storm system that has been pounding parts of the Midwest with torrential downpours and winds gusting close to 80 mph, forecasters from AccuWeather said.

Although the storms in New Jersey might not be as strong as those in the Midwest, some cells “have the potential to bring wind gusts between 60 and 90 mph,” AccuWeather says. “At this intensity, trees can be knocked over, property damage can occur and trucks and mobile homes might be flipped over. But, even with more common gusts between 40 and 60 mph, tree branches can break, and loose items such as trash cans, lawn furniture, tents and beach umbrellas can be sent airborne.”
