Another day of very warm temperatures across the Upper Midwest could help fuel an outbreak of severe thunderstorms across the Northland on Monday afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service in Duluth says there is an enhanced risk of severe storms from Grand Rapids to Bayfield, including the Iron Range and Twin Ports.
The biggest threat Monday is large hail — up to baseball size — and damaging winds up to 70 mph, with flash flooding and isolated tornadoes also possible, the Weather Service notes.
The storms are expected to develop from west to east from 5-8 p.m. across Koochiching, northern St. Louis and Itasca counties; from 6-9 p.m. from the Brainerd lakes area through the Arrowhead, including the Iron Range, North Shore and Twin Ports; and from 7-11 p.m. across Northwestern Wisconsin. Storms also could develop later in the evening.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the 80s and near 90 this week across the Northland with heat advisories posted for much of southern Minnesota.
