Severe thunderstorms poised to strike central Pa.: When can we expect them? - PennLive

Much of Pennsylvania is in for several rounds of severe thunderstorms Sunday, and some of them can pack a wallop with heavy rains and damaging winds.

But when can we expect these storms to strike the Harrisburg region?

According to the National Weather Service at State College, the first band of storms is already moving through western Pennsylvania and has prompted a severe thunderstorm warning in the Johnstown area.

Those morning thunderstorms are expected to slip to the south and miss Harrisburg, but more storms are heading our way, said National Weather Service at State College meteorologist Mike Colbert.

“Your threat locally is in the late afternoon or evening hours,” he said. “We’re starting to see a slight chance of showers in the late afternoon, continuing into this evening and even overnight through midnight.”

Severe thunderstorms are expected to move through Pennsylvania today. They could start as early as 2 p.m. in the Harrisburg area and continue off and on into the overnight hours. (National Weather Service at State College).

He said the exact timing is hard to pin down, but we can expect multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms starting around 2 p.m., then again around 4 or 5 p.m., and another chance closer to 8 p.m. or midnight.

Each storm brings a threat of strong, gusty winds, heavy rain and even a small chance of some hail, he said. There is also a marginal threat of flooding in areas that are typically prone to it.

And with the strong winds, there is always a chance of some isolated power outages.

Along with the storms, Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a high of 80 and a low of 65.

A marginal risk of severe weather continues into Monday for the start of the workweek. Expect a mostly sunny day with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms early in the day, increasing to a 60 percent chance after 4 p.m. Monday should see a high of 84 and a low of 61.

Tuesday will be drier, but a 30 percent chance of showers remains in the forecast on an otherwise mostly sunny day. Expect a high of 81 and a low of 59.

Several days of cooler temperatures with lower humidity will wrap up the workweek with sunny skies and a high of 78 and a low of 54 on Wednesday.

Thursday will be sunny with a high of 79 and a low around 56.

Friday should be sunny with a high of 84 and a low of 64.

And a 40 percent chance of showers returns for Saturday, which will be mostly sunny with a high of 86.
