Syracuse, N.Y. -- High temperatures will finally fall out of the mid 90s Wednesday, but in their place will come an increasing chance of storms with damaging winds and flooding rain.
Today’s high in much of Upstate New York will reach the 90s for the fourth day in a row. There’s a heat advisory in effect because the combination of temperature and high humidity could make it feel like nearly 100 degrees.
Scattered storms are possible today, and some of them could bring 40 mph winds and an inch of rain per hour, the National Weather Service said.
Wednesday’s high temperatures in the 80s and high humidity will serve as the foundation for storms, but it’s a passing cold front that is likely to increase their likelihood and severity.
“The threat of strong to severe storms is elevated during the day Wednesday, with damaging winds and hail the main threats,” the weather service said.
A severe storm is defined as one carrying winds of at least 58 mph and/or 1-inch hail. The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center says there’s a 15% chance of severe storms across Central and eastern New York Wednesday.
Some storms could drop heavy rain, too, and there’s a small chance for street flooding in areas that get hit with storms. No widespread flooding is expected.
“Tomorrow we can expect a severe weather event, as a moderate cold front moves into the humid air mass producing a line of strong thunderstorms between 2 and 9 p.m.,” said Mark Wysocki, an atmospheric sciences professor at Cornell University.
After the front passes Wednesday, temperatures start dropping. Thursday through Saturday, highs are likely to be in the mid to upper 70s. The early forecast for Sunday, Independence Day, is for low 80s and a 40% chance of showers.
