Severe weather continues in Alabama; severe thunderstorm watch in effect - AL.com

Storms and heavy rain were in progress across all of Alabama on Saturday afternoon.

Strong to severe storms will be possible statewide through the evening hours as a cold front approaches Alabama from the west. Two severe thunderstorm watches are in effect for the state as well.

The National Weather Service continues to get lots of hail reports as of Saturday afternoon. The weather service said hail up to the size of baseballs will be possible with some of these storms:

It’s already been an active day. Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and a few tornado warnings were issued earlier this morning in south Alabama (though no tornadoes have been confirmed so far). Many of the storms brought damaging wind gusts, and trees and power lines have been reported down in parts of southwest Alabama.

A severe thunderstorm watch continues for much of south Alabama until 9 p.m. CDT. This replaces an earlier tornado watch for southeast Alabama:

The Alabama counties in the severe thunderstorm watch are: Autauga, Baldwin, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Choctaw, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Russell, Washington and Wilcox.

A second severe thunderstorm watch has now been issued for parts of north and central Alabama. It will be in effect until 9 p.m.: CDT

The Alabama counties in this watch are Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Marshall, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa and Tuscaloosa.

The weather service said large hail is the main concern with the stronger storms.

The Storm Prediction Center also has a large part of Alabama under a risk for severe weather this afternoon.

Part of southeast and south=central Alabama has an enhanced risk for severe weather, which is Level 3 out of 5 and means numerous severe storms will be possible. The enhanced risk area has been trimmed back some as of the latest update at 11:20 a.m.

More storms will be possible statewide starting this afternoon ahead of a cold front that will move in from the west.

The afternoon storms could be strong to severe and bring another round of potentially damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said there are breaks in the clouds which could allow conditions to again become favorable for storms.

However, the weather service in Birmingham has downgraded the severe weather threat for some of central Alabama for the rest of the day, though strong storms remain possible nearly regionwide:

Forecasters are also on alert for the possibility of flash flooding. A flash flood watch will be in effect through late tonight for southeast Alabama including Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties.

The weather service said Mobile had record rainfall today. Mobile got 2.88 inches, breaking the record of 2.68 inches set in 1937.

Up to 4 inches of rain will be possible through today in the watch areas, especially in southeast Alabama.

The rain and storms are expected to move out of Alabama late tonight, and drier weather is expected statewide for Sunday and through the first part of next week.
