Level 1, marginal risk, for isolated severe storms turns to colder weather - WQOW TV News 18

After record setting temperatures Tuesday, mother nature has the weather whiplash handy for Wednesday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be ongoing throughout most of your Wednesday. General rumbles will bring gusty winds throughout the morning hours with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.

A slow moving, but strong cold front will cause a great temperature difference across the region, with 30s in northern Minnesota to 60s in southern Wisconsin. This vast difference in temperatures creates enough instability within the atmosphere to breed potentially severe storms.

A level 1, marginal risk, for severe isolated storms has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for portions of western Wisconsin. It includes Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire and Pepin county as well as other towards the Coulee Region.

The main threats will be strong straight-line wind gusts, marginally severe hail, and even an isolated tornado. There is ample shear (turning of the winds with height) that will support super cell development. These may be shallow storms, but they will have the energy to pack a punch.

The timing for the severe weather threats is highest in the mid afternoon to early evening when there will be a break in the precipitation. The point where the low pressure center, warm front and cold front collide is where the highest threats will live.

Rainfall amounts will range from 0.25'' to 0.75'' with isolated swaths over 1'' with the strongest thunderstorm activity.

Overnight, a few of showers could turn over to light snow for northern counties in the Chippewa Valley. Minnesota will be seeing heavy snowfall from this system Wednesday, but minimal to no accumulation is expected in western Wisconsin. I wish I could say the same for northern Wisconsin.

Beyond this system, there will be cooler, but still above average temperatures through the extended forecast.
