Two Systems Could Bring Heavy Rain, Severe Storms to Central, Southern US This Week | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com - The Weather Channel

  • Two low pressure systems will impact the central and southern U.S. this week.
  • They could both produce heavy rainfall and at least some severe thunderstorms.

A pair of storm systems could produce soaking rain and severe weather in portions of the central and southern U.S. this week.

The first low-pressure system will track from the Southern Plains into the upper Midwest from Monday through Tuesday. That will be followed by a second area of low pressure expected to track from out of the South toward the Ohio Valley or Great Lakes during the second half of the week.

Both of these systems could produce at least some severe thunderstorms as well as heavy rain.

Track of the Two Systems

Here's an overview of what we know right now.

System 1: Monday-Tuesday

Rainfall from this system will become widespread in parts of the South, Plains and Midwest by later Monday into Tuesday.

Some areas in the Plains and near the northern Gulf Coast could see heavy rain at times. That might trigger some pockets of localized flash flooding.

A lack of unstable air will limit the potential for severe thunderstorms from this system. However, a few strong to severe storms could produce hail or gusty winds on Monday evening from much of Oklahoma into northern Texas.

System 2: Wednesday-Friday

Another area of low pressure is expected to form on the tail end of the cold front from the first system and could produce more heavy rain as well as severe weather during the second half of the week.

There is a higher degree of uncertainty with this second system, particularly when it comes to its strength. That's important for determining how much severe weather it might produce.

A stronger low-pressure system would have a chance to produce a greater threat of severe thunderstorms in the South by Thursday. Conversely, a weaker low might keep the threat of severe thunderstorms more isolated.

Thursday's Forecast

This system is likely to produce heavy rain no matter how the potential threat of severe thunderstorms pans out.

It's a bit too early to pinpoint storm total rainfall amounts from both of the systems this week. Some areas in the South could see multi-inch rainfall totals through Friday, and that might increase flash flooding concerns in parts of the region.

A much broader area from the Plains into the Midwest and Ohio Valley might pick at least an inch of rain this week from one or both of these systems.

Rainfall Outlook This Week

(This should be interpreted as a broad outlook of where the heaviest rain may fall. Higher amounts may occur where bands or clusters of thunderstorms stall for over a period of a few hours. )
