Severe thunderstorm watch issued for parts of N.J. - NJ.com

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the central and southern regions of New Jersey for Sunday evening, warning of the possibility of wind, hail and tornadoes.

The service’s Mount Holly office said in a series of social media posts that severe weather could impact the region, including in New Jersey counties from Monmouth and Mercer and further south.

Isolated, severe thunderstorms are forecast to develop ahead of a cold front from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. across the state. The storms are expected to be limited in duration and intensity. The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

A wind advisory is also in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday covering Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union and Hudson counties.

West winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, the National Weather Service said.
