Enhanced risk for severe weather in Alabama on Thursday - AL.com

Forecasters think there could be enhanced chances for severe storms in Alabama on Thursday.

The Storm Prediction Center has a large part of the state in an enhanced risk for Thursday. That’s Level 3 out of 5 and means that “numerous” severe storms will be possible.

Tornadoes will also be possible, along with damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

However it should be noted that Thursday’s forecast confidence is still on the lower side -- it could be a milder storm event -- or it could be significant with long-track tornadoes. The forecast will become less murky in the coming days so it’s important to keep an eye on it.

The National Weather Service is also particularly concerned about the rain -- there could be a lot of it and it could lead to flash flooding.

Strong to severe storms will also be parts of southwest and west Alabama over the next few days.

The Storm Prediction Center has those parts of Alabama in a marginal risk (Level 1), which means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

Here is today’s severe weather outlook, with a marginal risk for southwest Alabama:

Here is Wednesday’s outlook, with a marginal risk for west Alabama:

Wednesday severe weather outlook

West Alabama will again have a marginal risk for severe weather on Wednesday. A marginal risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.

The rain will begin today and persist on and off through the rest of the week. It could be heavy at times, especially starting later on Wednesday.

Southwest Alabama looks to get the most with some spots getting 5 to even 10 inches through the end of the week.

All of the rest of the state should see at least some rain, with 1-4 inches possible.

A flash flood watch will go into effect this evening for Choctaw, Washington, Clarke, Mobile and Baldwin counties in southwest Alabama. The watch will last until Friday morning.

The weather service in Mobile said a multi-day heavy rain event is expected across the region, and between 5 and 10 inches of rain will be possible.

Some of those same spots had up to 7 inches of rain last week, so it won’t take much to cause flooding in some areas.

Thursday’s severe weather isn’t a sure thing. However, there’s also a chance it could be significant, with long-track tornadoes.

The reason for the uncertainty is that computer forecast models are not in agreement and sticking stubbornly to two widely different scenarios, according to the weather service.

One has rain and storms near the coast disrupting the evolution of stronger storms farther north. The other scenario shows the possibility of a tornado outbreak for parts of Alabama and Mississippi.

The models will have to come into closer agreement for forecast confidence to rise.

“Again, due to the great deal of uncertainty in this we will continue to take a cautious approach in advertising any higher end severe weather potential,” the weather service in Huntsville said Tuesday morning.

“What’s important to understand is that all modes of severe weather may be possible Thursday evening into Thursday night.”
