Forty firefighters are battling the Cameron Peak wildfire that broke out Thursday afternoon in the Rawah Wilderness near Chambers Lake, west of Fort Collins.
Air support was unable to assist with the effort due to high winds, according to a Canyon Lakes Ranger District-U.S. Forest Service press release.
The release termed the fire as “very active” and about 500 acres in size at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. By 8 p.m. the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center said it had grown to 1,537 acres.
At 9:30 p.m., the U.S. Forest Service reported the fire was at 1,540 acres and was under the management of a Type 3 Incident Command Team. A Type 2 Incident Command Team has been ordered.
The fire is located 25 miles east of Walden and 15 miles southwest of Red Feather Lakes near Cameron Pass.
According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Twitter feed, Colo. 14 has been closed between Rustic and Gould.
Evacuations were ordered from the area at the intersection of Colo. 14 and County Road 103 north to Four Corners, as well as the areas around Chambers Lake. People in the area were advised to travel north into Wyoming for safety reasons.
At 7 p.m., the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook that people should avoid going to the Poudre Canyon and Red Feather Lakes areas because of the fire. “With current weather conditions and fire behavior, we expect the evacuation area to grow,” the post said.
