Oklahoma City Dallas under Tornado Watch as severe storms expected to intensify into evening - Fox Weather

A night after the South was slammed by tornadoes, massive hailstones and blistering winds Wednesday, the atmosphere has recharged for another round of widespread severe weather on Thursday, only this time the threat has expanded back west across the Plains to cover parts of 12 states.

More than 21 million people from eastern Colorado and Kansas through the South and into the Florida Panhandle have once again been threatened by damaging wind gusts, hailstones larger than 2-3 inches and tornadoes.

The Plains have the greatest threat of dangerous weather Thursday, with NOAA's Storm Prediction Center issuing a Level 4 out of 5 severe weather risk across much of western Oklahoma into southwestern Kansas, while North and Central Texas and western Arkansas have a lower but still likely threat of severe storms.

Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm Watches stretch hundreds of miles

Once again Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watches have been issued across the Plains and the Southeast.

The latest watch box to be issued was a Tornado Watch that includes the Dallas metro through 10 p.m. CDT.

Tornado Watches now stretch from the Kansas-Oklahoma line southward through Central Texas.

Forecasters expect storms to produce giant hail, intense wind damage and a few tornadoes.

WE'VE ENTERED AMERICA'S MOST ACTIVE TIME OF YEAR FOR DAMAGING WINDS FROM SEVERE STORMS

Aside from wind and hail, heavy rains will bring a likely risk of flash flooding from central and western Mississippi through southern Alabama and Georgia, as well as the Florida Panhandle.

The National Weather Service has issued Flood Watches that will remain in effect through at least Friday afternoon.

Tornado causes damage in Texas Panhandle

At least one tornado impacted the Lone Star State on Thursday with the town of Perryton appearing to be hit by a twister during the late afternoon.

Damage appeared to be focused in a neighborhood around an industrial community with pieces of metal wrapped around utility poles and trees stripped of leaves.

Storm trackers said the tornado was on the ground for several minutes and also damaged a mobile home park.

First responders were spotted on scene just minutes after the tornado moved through.

Drone video showed at least one fire burning uncontrollably. It is unclear if there were any injuries in the rural community.

More severe storms could develop Friday from Plains to Southeast

The severe weather threat continues into Friday, though the forecast is not as intense or as widespread as Wednesday or Thursday.

The ongoing storms across the Southern Plains will gradually wind down, and new storms may develop along what's left over, according to the FOX Forecast Center. It's also possible the storms re-intensify during Friday, and those would then pose the greatest severe threat, but earlier in the day.

SPC currently has a Level 2 risk across much of the South once again, spreading from Arkansas into Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Another area to watch is in southwestern Kansas into southeastern Colorado and the Oklahoma Panhandle. Damaging winds and hail are the biggest threats, though an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.

Severe weather threat continues this weekend

Additional rounds of severe weather are likely this weekend as a jet stream disturbance slides east across the Plains and mid-South.

Late Saturday and into Saturday night, severe storms are expected across southern Kansas into Oklahoma, northern Texas and western Arkansas, and once again the threat spreads across the South. Risks includes the potential for supercells capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.

A more organized severe weather threat is possible Sunday and Sunday night across parts of the Ozark Plateau and mid-South into the Tennessee Valley.

Large hail and damaging wind gusts will likely be the primary threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
