The threat for severe weather has increased for Alabama on Sunday.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 risk for a large part of Alabama for Sunday in its forecast update on Saturday afternoon. It’s a big change -- in previous forecasts only extreme north Alabama had a Level 1 risk.
Part of the reason is the timing. Storms are now expected to arrive during some of the peak heating hours of the day, which could ramp up the intensity, according to forecasters.
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible. The strongest of those could have damaging straight-line winds, large hail and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service said multiple rounds of storms will be possible from late Sunday morning through Sunday night.
Severe storms aren’t a slam-dunk, however. The Storm Prediction Center acknowledged there was uncertainty in the forecast for how things would play out on Sunday because of model differences.
The weather service added that there are uncertainties in both timing and evolution of each potential round. “Storms will be approaching from the north/northwest, with the first round coming during the late morning to midday hours. The current forecast thinking is that the second round, which will come in the late afternoon to overnight hours, has better severe potential compared to the earlier round. Some model guidance suggests a third round during the overnight/early morning hours on Monday, which will bear watching in subsequent model runs,” forecasters said Saturday afternoon.
Rain is expected to move out of Alabama on Monday, although scattered showers will be possible each day through the week. However, there is no severe weather in the forecast for Alabama -- after Sunday -- for the rest of the five-day forecast period.
