While Michigan isn’t in the heart of the highest severe weather threat today, we have signs that some thunderstorms could produce severe weather.
The Storm Prediction Center is predicting a rather strong outbreak of severe thunderstorms just south of Michigan in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The southern half of Lower Michigan is in the northern area of the severe weather outlook.
The southwest corner of Lower Michigan, including Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo have the highest chance of severe thunderstorms. A complex of thunderstorms is expected to develop over southwest Lower late this afternoon or early this evening.
A wind gust is officially severe at 58 mph. The forecast below shows where isolated 60 mph gusts could occur over Lower Michigan late this afternoon and evening.
Those same storms that produce an isolated severe wind gust can also produce some large hail.
So the expectation is a clump of thunderstorms will develop over southwest Lower Michigan late this afternoon and move east-northeast during the evening. The storms will probably start to weaken after 8 p.m. This is why the severe weather outline ends near Saginaw, Flint and Ann Arbor. The severe thunderstorms may be running out of steam by then.
Here’s the radar forecast to give you a feel for the timing and size of the storms.
I wouldn’t call this a widespread severe weather outbreak, but if the storm hits your house you don’t care how widespread the storms are elsewhere.
We are in a general severe weather pattern right now and for the next week. Bookmark the MLive Weather page to check for updates if the weather gets severe. We will have to take the severe weather forecast one day at a time since these storm complexes are tough to time several days in the future.
