Parts of North Texas could see severe weather Friday afternoon and evening as storms move through the area.
About 5:45 p.m., the National Weather Service in Fort Worth issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Rockwall County, northeastern Kaufman County and southwestern Hunt County. The main threats are heavy wind and hail, and the warning is in effect until 6:30 p.m.
Golf ball-size hail was reported near McKinney earlier in the afternoon from the same storm system.
Most of the Dallas-Fort Worth region is under a severe thunderstorm watch — which means the conditions are favorable for severe weather to form — until 10 p.m.
Overnight, the weather service said, a complex of storms will move southeast through portions of North Texas, with the potential of some becoming severe. Damaging winds are the main threat, the weather service said.
The storms come as much of the region is under a heat advisory. According to the weather service, heat indices, which factor in air temperature and relative humidity, will peak around 105 to 108 degrees.
Since Sunday, most of North Texas has been experiencing severe heat. Earlier this week, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the state’s grid, asked residents to limit their power use to reduce the strain on the grid.
Parts of North Texas were hit with strong storms Wednesday afternoon, which grounded flights at DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field.
According to KXAS-TV (NBC5), high temperatures will be in the upper 90s Saturday, followed by several days of triple-digit heat Sunday into next week.
