Confidence is increasing in the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms erupting across the Plains by Thursday afternoon, and continuing into Friday. In the upper-levels, another potent trough will dig into the southwest from California. This upper-level energy will overspread a warm and unstable airmass, characterized by high humidity, transported on a southerly wind from the Gulf. Ample amounts of wind shear along with surface instability should result in vigorous thunderstorm development by the afternoon. All hazards of severe weather will be possible.
There appear to be two areas of concern. The first is further north towards the surface low, where low-level shear may be sufficient for a multi-hazard threat of wind, hail and tornadoes. Further south, greater instability ahead of an advancing cold front will provide an opportunity for additional severe thunderstorm development.
An area of low pressure and frontal boundaries push out of the Rockies during the day on Thursday, touching off showers and storms along the dryline and cold front through the afternoon. Storms won't be widespread but we will see several pockets of strong storms.
Friday
Confidence is higher in more widespread activity by Friday as the main upper-level energy swings through. The Storm Prediction Center already issued an Enhanced Risk for Friday due to the confidence of significant severe storms. Folks from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes need to be on alert for the severe threat.
Showers and storms continue early Friday morning leftover from the previous days system. As the cold front swings through we anticipate more storms to develop, with a pocket through Arkansas/Mississippi/Louisiana and another pocket of severe weather closer to the Great Lakes. Storms will continue through the first part of the overnight, as the cold front approaches I-95 and the coast.
