FIRST ALERT: Multiple rounds of strong to severe storms expected Sunday - WSFA

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Today, March 26th, is a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY as multiple waves of heavy rain and thunderstorms will impact the area. There is high potential for multiple strong and severe thunderstorms throughout the remainder of our afternoon, evening, and overnight hours. The threat for more thunderstorms will even continue through Monday morning.

So far, what we have seen on radar today has been thunderstorms producing large hail; we have seen several reports from across our area, so it is important to take severe thunderstorm warnings seriously as wind speeds near 60+ mph and more hail are possible in the strongest part of the storm’s core.

That is why the majority of our counties are also under a severe thunderstorm watch until 6pm.

As the day goes on the risk for large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes will continue. The threat for damaging winds and tornadoes will actually increase as we progress later into your Sunday.

In addition to severe weather, the risk for flash flooding will be elevated today and tonight as storms will produce prolific rainfall rates. Wherever storms “train” over the same areas there could be totals of 2-5″. This will lead to some flash flooding issues.

With this being a long duration event, it is as important as ever to be prepared for threatening and damaging weather. Having multiple ways to receive watches and warnings will be imperative. This includes a NOAA Weather Radio and our WSFA 12 News First Alert Weather app.

Keeping your electronics charged in the event of power outages will also be important today. If possible, move any vehicles to a sheltered location to avoid hail damage. Lastly, ensure you have a plan in place for wherever you may be today in case severe weather threatens your location.

The repeated rounds of strong and severe thunderstorms should end by early Monday afternoon. However, there will additional rain and perhaps a few embedded thunderstorms Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. At this point it doesn’t look like there will be any severe weather with that disturbance.

A "medium" chance of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding exists today.

A lull in rain chances arrives Wednesday. We will stay entirely dry Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with increasing temperatures each day. Highs will go from near 70 degrees on Wednesday to the upper 70s Thursday and the mid-80s Friday and Saturday.

Some cool nights will occur during this stretch. Lows will fall well into the 40s both Tuesday night and Wednesday night. So if you aren’t quite ready for the warmth, you’ve got some cooler weather coming.

Rain and storms are likely through Monday morning, then again Monday night into Tuesday.

A cold front will bring a renewed chance for showers and thunderstorms Friday night and Saturday. The potential does exist for strong storms given the environment we could have in place, so be sure to keep checking back for updates regarding this system!
