'Severe,' 'unusual' weather diverts multiple Bay Area flights - SFGATE

Yet another atmospheric river brought 86 mph winds and flash floods to the Northern California region this week, and while the roads in Oakland were in disarray, the brutal weather didn’t spare Bay Area airways either. Multiple planes were forced to divert from San Jose International Airport late Thursday night and early Friday morning, representatives said.

“Weather conditions last night caused low level wind shear, making it difficult to land throughout the Bay Area,” SJC representative Keonnis Taylor told SFGATE. “This required some aircraft operations to be rerouted, including at SJC, where severe weather conditions are unusual.”

Wind shear — fluctuating wind speeds that occur in short periods of time — is described as a “major hazard” for planes operating at these low levels, according to the World Meteorological Association. Thursday night, it forced pilots to make multiple “go-arounds” at San Francisco International Airport, spokesperson Doug Yakel told SFGATE, though they were able to eventually land safely at SFO.

That same evening, 64 mph winds whipped past Mount Umunhum in Santa Clara County, the National Weather Service reported. Airplane passengers seemed to have experienced these high winds while in the air.

One user on Twitter said they experienced “crazy” turbulence due to the tumultuous weather. They reportedly had to divert from SJC to Los Angeles International Airport due to the heavy rain and wind before landing at SFO nearly six hours later than planned.

Others said that the wind shear was so intense that passengers were vomiting during flights and that it took pilots multiple attempts to safely land.

Unfortunately, SJC representatives believe that traveling in the region won’t get any easier. Though there’s a 50% chance of rain Friday afternoon and “calm” winds in the city’s evening forecast, some flights from SJC likely will still be canceled.

“We do anticipate cancellations today,” Taylor told SFGATE, adding that there’s been one canceled inbound flight and three canceled outbound flights due to the weather.
