Severe Storm Threat Returns To The South - The Weather Channel

  • Severe storms will develop in the South beginning Thursday.
  • Damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes are possible.
  • An isolated severe storm threat could linger near the Gulf Coast on Friday.

Severe thunderstorms will return to the South late this week and could produce damaging straight-line winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding.

The South has been in the bull's-eye for repeated rounds of severe weather this winter. March 2-3 had the most recent widespread outbreak to hit the region.

Now, another storm system is set to arrive in the South that could have the necessary ingredients to produce at least scattered severe thunderstorms. Here's a look at what to expect.

The potential for severe weather will peak on Thursday and Thursday night: We expect the potential for severe storms from around the Interstate 35 corridor in central and northern Texas into parts of southern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and far western Mississippi.

Damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes could accompany some of the storms, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours. The greatest chance for destructive large hail and wind damage is in the area shaded red on the map below, including the Dallas-Fort Worth metro.

Flash flooding is also possible, especially from eastern Texas into the lower Mississippi Valley.

A few severe storms might linger farther east on Friday: The moist air needed to fuel severe storms will be limited as this system's cold front moves across the rest of the South. However, isolated severe storms can't be ruled out near the Gulf Coast in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle on Friday. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are possible threats.

Here's what is triggering this round of storms: The jet-stream energy associated with the atmospheric river hitting California Tuesday will eventually move into the Plains by Thursday.

That will trigger the formation of a low-pressure system which, in tandem with its associated cold front, will help draw increasing moisture into the south-central states.

Those two ingredients will team up to form numerous showers and thunderstorms, some of which could turn severe at times.
