- A powerful storm will trigger severe weather in the Upper Midwest Wednesday.
- Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, but a few tornadoes area also possible.
An unusual threat of severe storms for mid-December will hit the upper Midwest late Wednesday, including one state where a tornado has never been confirmed in the final month of the year.
Intensifying low pressure will track from out of the Plains to the Great Lakes into early Thursday. That low itself will generate a widespread risk of damaging winds across a large part of the central U.S., including many areas that won't see severe thunderstorms.
The upper Midwest is where that low-pressure system will overlap enough moisture to produce severe weather. Areas from northern Missouri and far eastern Nebraska into much of Iowa, southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin have the greatest chance to see severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon into the evening hours.
A line of storms should develop on the western edge of the severe weather risk area shown below and then rapidly charge eastward toward the upper Mississippi Valley. Damaging wind gusts to 80 mph and a few tornadoes are possible in these areas, especially in areas shaded darker red and purple. A few spots could even see stronger wind gusts up to 100 mph.
Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Rochester, Minnesota, and La Crosse, Wisconsin are some of the cities that could see severe storms.
As mentioned earlier, there will be the potential for wind damage and power outages across a broader area of the central U.S. from this storm system Wednesday through early Thursday.
High wind warnings have been posted by the National Weather Service from parts of the Front Range of the Rockies to the Plains, upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes. Wind gusts of 55 to 70 mph are possible in some of these areas.
Upper Midwest Severe Threat Unusual For December
The Upper Midwest is not a typical threat area for severe weather in December.
One example of this is the fact that the entire state of Minnesota has never seen a tornado in December since at least 1950.
Iowa has only had six confirmed tornadoes in December since 1950, with the last one hitting the state on Dec. 4, 2017 (rating: EF2).
Wisconsin has seen five confirmed December tornadoes since 1950, and all of those struck in 1970.
