More strong storms possible today in Alabama; watching for more severe weather on Saturday - AL.com

Strong to severe storms will again be possible today in Alabama, according to forecasters.

And not just today. North Alabama could have to deal with strong storms on Friday, and another widespread severe weather event is taking shape for Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the southern two-thirds of Alabama in a marginal risk for severe weather today in its latest severe weather outlook. A marginal risk is Level 1 out of 5 and means isolated severe storms are possible (see the map at the top of this post).

A band of rain and storms was situated across parts of central Alabama on Thursday morning. They were noisy and dropping a lot of rain but staying under severe limits so far. The weather service expects them to slowly shift southeast through the day.

There have not been any severe weather warnings during the overnight hours. That wasn’t the case on Wednesday night, when several areas reported damage from what could have been tornadoes.

The weather service will have to survey the damage to confirm if it was caused by tornadoes or thunderstorm winds, but there were multiple tornado warnings issued on Wednesday for areas in north and central Alabama.

Storms later today will have a chance to become severe and bring damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail. The risk for tornadoes will be lower today than it was on Wednesday.

There is also a risk for flooding. The weather service in Birmingham has areas in central Alabama under a flood watch and has extended it until 6 p.m. today.

Rain and storms may taper off by tonight but will be possible again on Friday. They are expected to be scattered across the state but areas in north Alabama could see a stronger storm as a warm front tracks northward near the region.

The Storm Prediction Center has part of north Alabama in a marginal (Level 1) risk for severe weather on Friday.

Friday severe weather outlook

Part of north Alabama will have a marginal risk for severe weather on Friday. That's Level 1 out of 5 and means isolated severe storms will be possible.

SATURDAY SEVERE POTENTIAL

The first day of 2022 could be another potentially busy weather day for Alabama as a cold front approaches the state.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the northern two-thirds of the state in a slight risk for severe weather. A slight risk is Level 2 out of 5 and means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

Here is Saturday’s severe weather outlook:

Saturday severe weather outlook

Most of Alabama will again run the risk of seeing strong to severe storms on Saturday. The areas in yellow have a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather.

On Saturday tornadoes will again be possible, as well as damaging wind gusts, hail and more heavy rain.

Temperatures on Saturday will again be near record levels -- in the 70s north or even low 80s south -- and moist air will surge northward from the Gulf, setting the stage for strong to severe storms.

“With high temperatures on New Year’s Day rising into the 70s, along with dewpoints in the mid 60s, and the approach of this cold front, bad things can happen,” the weather service in Huntsville said in its Thursday morning forecast discussion.

Storms could reach north Alabama on Saturday afternoon (be aware the timing could change, however) and track southeastward through the rest of the state during the evening and overnight hours.

Cold air is forecast to move in behind Saturday’s system, sending temperatures plummeting late Saturday into Sunday. There’s a chance some of the departing rain could mix with the cold air and produce a few snow flurries for parts of north and central Alabama, according to the weather service.

“Accumulations are not expected at this time for our area, but these trends will be monitored closely,” the weather service in Huntsville said Thursday.

Only light flurries will be possible for central Alabama, according to the weather service in Birmingham.

Winter temperatures will begin to return to Alabama by Sunday with highs only expected to reach the upper 30s in northwest Alabama.

South Alabama will hang on to the warmth a little longer, and highs in the 60s are expected.

However, the entire state will be much cooler by Monday with highs only making it into the 40s and 50s:
