Isolated severe storms possible in Alabama tonight and Monday - al.com

Alabama will have to deal with its first chance for severe weather in a while tonight and into Monday.

A cold front is forecast to push across the state and could generate isolated strong storms ahead of it, according to the National Weather Service.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has put the northwest corner of Alabama in a marginal risk for severe weather for tonight, and a large part of Alabama in a marginal risk on Monday.

Here’s Sunday’s severe weather risk:

Sunday severe weather outlook

The northwest corner of Alabama has the potential to see a strong storm or two late tonight.

Monday’s severe weather outlook is at the top of this post.

A marginal risk is Level 1 out of 5 and means isolated severe storms will be possible.

It’s been a while since the possibility of strong storms has been in the forecast for Alabama. Here’s how the Storm Prediction Center categorizes severe weather threats:

Severe weather risk categories

Parts of Alabama will have a marginal risk for severe weather overnight and on Monday.

North Alabama will face the threat for strong storms first, and it is expected to begin overnight, according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville.

Forecasters said damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, but a tornado can’t be ruled out. The weather service also said a half-inch to 1.5 inches of rain will be possible as the storms move through.

The threat for isolated severe storms will shift southward through the day on Monday and could affect central and parts of south Alabama. Southeast Alabama is the only area not included in the marginal risk for severe storms.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said a few strong storms will be possible on Monday as the front pushes across central Alabama, but widespread severe weather isn’t expected.

Central Alabama Monday forecast

A few storms are expected across central Alabama on Monday.

Winds could gust up to 30 or 40 mph in any stronger storms that develop, forecasters said. The weather service expects storms to be weakening as the pass farther into Alabama on Monday.

Forecasters expect rain and storms to make it into southwest Alabama later on Monday afternoon, and there will be the potential for brief wind gusts in the 40-60 mph range, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.

Forecasters said the best potential for a stronger storm will likely be along and northwest of Interstate 65 during the early to mid-afternoon, and the line should be weakening as it tracks southeastward.

Between a half-inch and an inch of rain will be possible, the weather service said.

This will not be the only chance for rain -- and storms -- this week. The weather service is tracking several other systems that have the potential to bring storms to Alabama on Tuesday and Wednesday and again near the end of the week.

It’s still too soon to say if severe weather will be possible, but right now it appears the system expected to make it here next weekend could bring some stronger storms.
