On Friday, the risk area shifts into the Upper Midwest. There is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms from the Red River of the North into Northern South Dakota. Large hail and strong wind gusts are the main concerns.
As temperatures climb into the 80s, dew points will push into the 60s. This will create modest instability along the front, aiding in severe weather development.
A low pressure center and cold front will slowly move eastward Friday. As instability climbs and jet stream energy arrives, thunderstorms will fire throughout the late afternoon and evening. A second low will develop and move to the northeast, creating additional thunderstorms through the night.
The storm system will re-organize Saturday, shifting the severe weather risk from the Minnesota River Valley into Eastern South Dakota. The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms, a level 1 threat (on a scale of 1 to 5).
Robust jet stream energy will arrive in the late afternoon and evening, fueling the development of thunderstorms. As the deep trough aloft moves into the region, wind shear will increase, helping to create severe thunderstorms.
At the surface, the low pressure center will move slowly and weaken throughout the day. This will keep severe weather development isolated, although numerous thunderstorms will move across the region.
