Three lines of thunderstorms will move across various parts of Michigan late this afternoon into tonight. Each line could have brief severe thunderstorms and affect a different part of Michigan.
Here is the radar forecast between 5 p.m. this evening and midnight tonight.
The first burst of severe thunderstorms will ignite between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. along the Lake Michigan shoreline around the Grand Traverse region, and then move north into the eastern U.P. This first round of storms could have isolated damaging wind gusts, isolated hail and even an isolated tornado.
The second line of thunderstorms has the highest chance of producing severe weather in Lower Michigan. This line will move onshore into southwest Lower Michigan between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and eventually the Grand Rapids area will have the storms with severe potential in the first half of the evening. Isolated damaging wind gusts are most likely, but there is also the chance of isolate large hail and an isolated tornado.
As that line of storms moves northeast, the storms should weaken to less than severe levels east of Grand Rapids.
The third line of storms will take almost the same path as the second line of storms, through southwest Lower Michigan and sweep across southern Lower. This third line will travel across southern Lower between midnight and 4 a.m. The late night timeframe should mean these storms won’t be as severe as the first two lines of storms.
Here is the overall severe weather forecast. The yellow area has the highest chance of severe weather this evening.
