A frontal boundary pushing through the central United States is prompting severe weather concerns across the Great Lakes region on Friday. By the start of the weekend, the threat moves into the northeast. We have limited instability to work with, but a few severe storms are not out of the question.
The severe weather threat will sit across much of New England stretching down into the tri-state area and NOVA. All modes of severe weather will be possible.
We will be monitoring showers and storms ejecting out of the Great Lakes region on Saturday morning. Pockets of heavy rain are likely across western New York and Pennsylvania.
By the midday hours, we will be shifting our attention to central NY, PA and into NOVA as daytime heating works with these storms to destabilize the atmosphere and strengthen storms into the afternoon hours.
A robust line of storms will be in place across the northeast on Saturday, with heavy rain leading to the flooding concern. Within this line we will be watching for pockets of damaging wind and the potential for embedded areas of rotation.
Showers and storms will continue into the first part of Sunday morning, with heavy rain the primary concerns. Behind this front, we anticipate much cooler air and a few showers lingering across western NY and PA.
Right now there are no flood alerts in place, but parts of the northeast are still very saturated from a busy September. As a result, flash flooding may be possible in some locations on Saturday and Sunday as 1-3″ of rainfall is likely, with locally higher totals.
This cold front will really swing our temperatures back to the colder side of things with about a 10-20° drop by the beginning of next week. For more on the temperature trend, read here.
